Good Morning Madeira Baseball Family,

Finally, March is here which means baseball is around the corner. While many of you are getting excited for your upcoming spring break trips to warmer weather, High School Baseball Coaches across the state are hopeful for warm weather and minimal rain here in Ohio.  While March can be a difficult month to be able to play baseball, our team is incredibly excited as the first regular season game is quickly approaching on March 28th.

Team Update

The first week of practice is in the books. We have had a great first week of baseball practice as there are always many new concepts and drills being presented for the first time throughout that week. The early weeks of practice can be a little challenging due to the fact that we are typically inside and we trying to simulate a baseball field in a basketball gymnasium, but I am incredibly proud of the way our players continue to get better each day. This past week, we have focused on pitching mechanics and bullpens, bunt coverages, 1st and 3RD situations, baserunning philosophies/fundamentals, run downs, defensive fundamentals, hitting mechanics/approach, team offense and more.  This has already been an energetic and coachable group and I am incredibly excited for opening day down at UC.

Mustangs on the Next Level

Andrew Benintendi – Andrew is beginning his 5th year in the big leagues as he signed a 2 year deal with the Boston Red Sox prior to Spring Training. We are always excited to follow Andrew as he continues to play on baseball’s biggest stage in Boston.

Sam Wirsing – In his sophomore year at Wright State University, Sam has quickly pitched himself to a hot start as he beat #2 Louisville on ESPN while hurling 4 innings of baseball.

Casey Wirsing – Casey is a Freshman at the University of Findlay where he has 5.2 innings pitched on the year and has a 1-0 record.

Tyler Sullivan – Tyler is continuing to finish his rehab from last season’s injury and work back towards the mound.  Once Tyler is back to being healthy, he will add an immediate impact for Ohio Dominican on the mound.

Josh Slade – Josh is in his freshman year at Bluffton University. Josh currently has one appearance on the young season with 4 innings pitched.

Gene Matsudo Night at GABP

Gene Matsudo donates countless hours of his time to cut and manicure the grass, clean the dugouts, and care for the bullpens at Madeira High School's home varsity field - Sellman Field.  Each spring and summer since 2012, Gene, at the age of 87, has been a one man grounds crew and is often seen "working the fields" whether it's cold in the spring or hot in the summer.  The Madeira High School baseball team has affectionately named him "The Grass Man" and dubbed him an honorary team member.  He attends most every game wearing his Madeira "Matsudo" jersey the team gave him, and will participate for the second year in a row in their upcoming 5K fun run.  At the end of each season, Gene prints team baseball cards for the players with the simple phrase - "Through life's ups and downs, keep your eyes on the prize finding joy in the journey until you reach your goals."  This year, we have had the unique opportunity to partner with the Reds to honor Gene Matsudo for all of his generosity throughout the years. On April 10th, Gene will be recognized prior to the Reds game as he will be Throwing Out the First Pitch and he will be on the field to watch the teams take pre-game batting practice. If you are interested in attending this game and helping us show our support to Gene, you are able to purchase tickets through the link below.

Youth Camp

This Saturday is the first Saturday of our Youth Baseball Camp. The Madeira High School Baseball Team will be holding our annual Baseball Camp on Saturday, March 7th and 14th at Madeira High School. This year, we will focus on all three phases of baseball. The camp will focus on the fundamental skills of hitting, pitching, and defense in order to develop the complete baseball player. Not only is this a great opportunity for our youth baseball players, it is an amazing opportunity for our current players to give back to the community and build relationships with our youth.
